Manufacturing Process

Our AMS 4928 Grade 5 titanium products are manufactured through controlled processes to ensure specification compliance:

1. Raw Material Selection
High-purity titanium sponge and master alloys (Al-V) are verified for chemistry before melting, ensuring low interstitial content and consistent alloy composition.

2. Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)
Multiple VAR melts produce homogeneous ingots with controlled chemistry and minimal segregation, critical for aerospace-grade Ti-6Al-4V.

3. Forging / Rolling
Ingots are forged or rolled above and below the beta transus to refine grain structure and achieve the desired product form. Processing parameters are controlled to meet AMS 4928 mechanical property requirements.

4. Annealing
Material is annealed per AMS 4928 requirements (typically 700–785°C) to relieve internal stress and achieve the specified annealed condition.

5. Finishing
Bars are peeled, ground, or machined to final dimensions. Surface condition is inspected for defects that could affect machinability or part integrity.

6. Inspection & Certification
Each lot undergoes chemical analysis, mechanical property testing, and dimensional inspection. EN 10204 3.1 MTC is issued with heat number traceability.

Manufacturing Process

Quality Assurance & Testing

We operate a lot-by-lot release system—no material ships without passing full AMS 4928 compliance testing.

  • Chemical composition by ICP-OES or combustion analysis (O/N/H)
  • Tensile testing per ASTM E8 to verify AMS 4928 mechanical properties
  • Hardness testing (Rockwell C, typical 30–34 HRC in annealed condition)
  • Microstructure evaluation for alpha-beta phase distribution and absence of deleterious phases
  • Dimensional inspection per order requirements
  • Ultrasonic inspection available for forging stock and critical bar applications upon request
  • Third-party inspection (SGS, TÜV, Bureau Veritas) arranged at buyer's request
  • Documentation provided: EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate (MTC) with heat number, chemical and mechanical test reports, and dimensional certification.

FAQ

Q1: What does AMS 4928 cover?
AMS 4928 is the SAE Aerospace Material Specification covering annealed Ti-6Al-4V (6Al-4V) titanium alloy in the form of bars, wire, forgings, flash-welded rings, and drawn shapes. It specifies chemical composition, mechanical properties (minimum 120–125 ksi yield depending on section size), and inspection requirements for aerospace applications.

Q2: What is the difference between AMS 4928 and ASTM B348?
Both cover Ti-6Al-4V bars and forgings, but AMS 4928 is the aerospace-grade specification with more stringent testing and traceability requirements. ASTM B348 is the general industrial specification. For aerospace applications, AMS 4928 is typically required.

Q3: Is AMS 4928 material supplied in annealed condition?
Yes. AMS 4928 specifies the annealed condition as the delivery condition. This provides good machinability and ductility. The material can subsequently be solution treated and aged to achieve higher strength if the application requires it.

Q4: What is the maximum size available for AMS 4928 bars?
AMS 4928 covers bars up through 10.000 inches (254 mm) in diameter or least distance between parallel sides. For sizes beyond this or for custom forgings, please contact us with your requirements.

Q5: Can you provide material for aerospace source inspection?
Yes. We support customer source inspection and third-party inspection (SGS, TÜV, Bureau Veritas) at our facility or via pre-shipment arrangements. Please specify inspection requirements at quotation.

Q6: What is your MOQ and lead time?
MOQ varies by product form and size—typically 100 kg for standard bar sizes. Lead time is 3–4 weeks for stock items; 6–8 weeks for custom forgings or non-standard sizes. Confirmed at quotation.
