702 zirconium tubing and 705 are two widely adopted zirconium alloy materials in the nuclear industry. They exhibit significant differences in composition design, mechanical properties, and practical applications. Proper material selection is crucial for ensuring system safety and efficiency.

I. Chemical Composition Differences

702 zirconium tubing is based on high-purity zirconium (Zr content ≥99.2%) with trace amounts of iron (Fe) and chromium (Cr). Its high zirconium content confers exceptional corrosion resistance, particularly in high-temperature steam environments.
705 zirconium tubing, however, is a zirconium-niobium alloy, typically containing approximately 2.5% niobium (Nb). The addition of niobium creates a solid solution strengthening effect, significantly enhancing the material's strength and hardness. However, its stability in certain corrosive media is slightly lower than that of 702 zirconium tubing.

II. Mechanical Properties Comparison

Benefiting from niobium's strengthening effect, 705 zirconium tubing achieves tensile strengths exceeding 550 MPa—far surpassing the approximately 300 MPa of 702 tubing—while maintaining elongation around 20%. This combination of toughness and rigidity makes it suitable for high-mechanical-load environments, such as structural support components in nuclear reactor fuel assemblies.
Although 702 zirconium tubing is less strong than 705, it offers superior plasticity and formability. It is commonly used for manufacturing heat transfer tubes or chemical equipment linings requiring extremely high corrosion resistance.

III. Primary Application Scenarios

Due to its outstanding resistance to acid, alkali, and chloride ion corrosion, 702 zirconium tubing is the material of choice for chemical equipment, seawater desalination units, and heat transfer tubes in certain nuclear power plants.
705 zirconium tubing, with its high strength and excellent creep resistance, is widely used in applications requiring both corrosion resistance and high stress tolerance, such as pressure tubes in nuclear power plants and aerospace engine components.

It can be said that 702 zirconium tubing acts as the system's “corrosion shield,” maintaining stability in harsh media, while 705 zirconium tubing functions more like the “structural backbone,” providing reliable support under mechanical challenges. In practical engineering applications, a comprehensive selection should be based on media corrosivity, mechanical loads, and total lifecycle costs to achieve the optimal balance between performance and economic efficiency.
